As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this high quality Japanese Meiji period (1869-1912) circa 1890, gold lacquer & shibayama miniature tsuitate (table screen), the main shibayama panel depicts a fantastic rendition of a prancing elephant surrounded by and ridden upon by a band of musicians, the band playing a host of musical instruments and waving banners, the quality of the gold lacquer work and shibayama detail is fantastic, about as good as it gets in my opinion, and held in place with silver mounts upon the hardwood back panel, to the reverse a series of three oval ivory roundels depicting a more tranquil scene of birds and butterflies in flight amidst a gold lacquer and shibayama floral displays, the panel then slots snugly into its purpose made hardwood stand, the stand carved in fine detail and further decorated with gold lacquer & shibayama inset panels and decoration, the quality of the overall workmanship is exceptional, in particular the solid silver mounts are chased in exquisite detail, although obviously a collaboration of artists produced this Meiji Period masterpiece, it would appear that the dominant shibayama artist has signed the crisply carved mother of pearl tablet that translates to read “Naomasa”  certainly a rare and high quality object for your Japanese works of art collection .
