As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large scale very high quality Meiji period 1868-1912 mixed metal vase , signed by Yukiaki on behalf of the Nogawa company, the body of this exquisite baluster shaped vase is formed from a heavy quality caramel coloured bronze onlaid in fantastic detail and in a multitude of mixed metals including gold , silver, shakudo and shibuichi , the main body decorated with charming and typically Japanese sprays of iris amidst reeds, the wonderful pierced and shaped gold lined base finely onlaid with stylized mixed metal butterflies upon scrolling gold wires, two further gold bands around the neck are decorated in between with high quality mixed metal bats amidst stylized scrolls, finally the rim of the vase carries a geometric shakudo chain between gold bands, a stunning decorative piece of mixed metal work from one of my favourite factories of the Meiji period, having handled dozens of pieces of work from this company of varying sizes, qualities and price levels, I consider that the sheer scale of this vase and the other example linked below to be extraordinary, and both by the same artist, I conclude that they are highly likely to have been commissioned for one of the later Meiji period expositions, this vase certainly falls into an exhibition category given its scale and quality , artist signed Yukiaki to the underside and accompanied by a gilt Nogawa seal.
